NJIT vs Liberty Prediction

The Liberty Flames host the New Jersey Institute of Technology Highlanders Saturday in an Atlantic Sun Conference game. The Flames lead the conference at 23-3 overall and 9-3 in the conference while NJIT is 7-16 overall and 4-6 in the Atlantic Sun. Liberty destroyed NJIT back on January 4 by the score of 65-38 in New Jersey. Who will cover here? Game time is Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET at Vines Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.

This has not been a good year for the New Jersey Tech Highlanders. They are 7-16 overall and 4-6 in the conference. One of the lowlights was a 75-38 drubbing they suffered at the hands of Liberty in their own building. They had a decent run after that loss, but have settled back into a funk, losing their last three games. They are currently ranked No. 322 in the RPI ratings -- out of 353 teams. Obviously, not good. The Highlanders offense is anemic, averaging 64.6 points per game, which ranks No. 326 in the nation. They shoot 40 percent from the floor (318th) and 31 percent from three-point range, which ranks 296th in the nation. Defensively, the Highlanders give up 68.9 points per game, which is 169th in the country. Opponents shoot 44 percent against them, which is 268th in the country. They don’t do much very well. Zach Cooks is a bright spot. He averages 19.3 points per game, which leads the Atlantic Sun, along with 2.3 assists per game. San Antonio Brinson is second in scoring with 12 points per game and 5.2 rebounds per game. Shyquan Gibbs averages 9 points per game while Souleyman Diakite averages 7 points and a team-high 8.4 rebounds per game.

The Liberty Flames are having a great year. They lead the Atlantic Sun with a record of 21-3 overall and 9-2 in the conference. They are tied with North Florida at 9-2, a team that beat them earlier this year 71-70. They have been on a roll as of late, winning 4 straight and they should clearly make it five straight here. They have not lost this year at home. They are currently ranked No. 66 in the RPI rankings, so they have a good shot of making it to the dance as a conference winner -- and maybe even at-large. Liberty averages 68 points per game, which ranks 270th in the nation. They are highly efficient, shooting 48 percent from the floor, which is 18th in the country. They shoot 36 percent from three-point range, which ranks No. 43. On the defensive side, they are ridiculous. They give up just 52..5 points per game, which ranks No. 2 in the country. Opponents shoot just 37 percent against them, which ranks No. 4. With defense like that, you don’t need much offense. Liberty is led by Caleb Homesly, who averages 13.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. Scottie James averages 10.8 points and 7.4 rebounds while Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz averages 10.2 points per game.

Liberty is a defensive juggernaut. There’s little question of whether or not they’ll win, but the question is: Will they cover the sizable spread? The Highlanders only mustered 38 points last time against Liberty, can they mount more of an attack?
