  • The Denver Nuggets have a 1.5-game lead on the Utah Jazz for the three-seed in the Western Conference.

  • At +2500, the Nuggets are given a decent chance to capture a title by DraftKings.

  • Michael Porter Jr. showed flashes in January, going for 20 and 25 points in games during the month.

  • Denver will be incredibly dangerous if Porter Jr. has taken any leaps during the time off from action.

Unreal Talent, But Behind On Development

Let’s just state this right up front, the Denver Nuggets are going to struggle to compete for a championship this year. If by chance they make a bigger splash, it would be due to an early coming out party by Michael Porter Jr. Most think he isn’t ready to make the leap, but when he does -- and he will -- the Nuggets will become serious title contenders.

Many raved when the Nuggets took Porter at 14th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft. The 6’10” forward is the closest thing we’ve seen to Kevin Durant, talent-wise, but his young career has been marred by injuries. He was one of the top players coming out of high school in 2017, but he got injured in his first game for Missouri and missed almost his entire freshman year. Porter Jr. declared for the 2018 NBA Draft and fell to 14th overall due to his back issues. He wound up missing his entire first year with the Nuggets.

Porter Jr. Occasionally Flashes Potential

This season, Porter Jr. (who turns 22 this month) finally took the court after missing the past two seasons. Denver eased him in slowly as he played in 48 games and averaged 14 minutes per contest. He averaged 7.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game when the pandemic hit, but showed flashes of what the Nuggets expect him to be.

For example, Porter Jr. poured in 25 points on January 2nd at the Indiana Pacers, going 11-for-12 shooting. He scored 20 points and hauled in 14 rebounds on January 25th against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Difference-Maker In The Wings

Porter Jr. represents exactly what the Nuggets need to take that next step to become a championship team. They are well coached, play solid defense, have a star center in Nikola Jokic, have an excellent point guard in Jamal Murray, and a lot of good role players. They need that one go-to wing scorer to really open things up for Jokic and Murray to keep defenses honest -- and Porter Jr. is the guy. He has all the skills to be a top scorer in the league with his size, perimeter shooting, pull-up jumper and natural scoring ability.

Porter Jr. has yet to arrive, but next year could really be a breakout for the young prospect -- and if it is, look out for the Nuggets.
