Not only have the San Antonio Spurs gotten off to an uncharacteristically-bad start and sit five games under .500, but they’re also the only NBA team with less than 10 wins against the spread.

  • In fact, the Spurs are 9-19-1 ATS.

As significant road underdogs against the Dallas Mavericks, who should benefit from the presumed return of superstar Luka Doncic (ankle), the Spurs will have another major challenge ahead of them. To this point, it’s clear that LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan haven’t been able to lead San Antonio to consistent success, even though they’re surrounded by Rudy Gay, Patty Mills, Bryn Forbes and Dejounte Murray, all of whom average double-figures in points  per game. Derrick White is just one tenth of a point away from becoming the seventh Spur to average double-figures, which is a remarkable stat for a struggling club. More than anything, that fact hammers home the recent paradigm shift away from a team-centric style of play towards a star-driven philosophy.
