Pacers Need Myles Turner To Step Up Offensively

The center will have a major impact on Indiana's ability to win in the postseason

  • Myles Turner is a wildcard piece for the Indiana Pacers offense, considering he's a big man with range.

  • Shooting just 33.6 percent from deep this season, the Pacers would love for Turner to return to his 2018-2019 form when he shot 38.8 percent from beyond the arc.

  • Indiana will look for Turner to step up if Malcolm Brogdon isn't 100 percent when the regular-season resumes.

  • At +10000 (DraftKings), the Pacers are dark horses to capture a championship.

Fitting The Mold Of A Center In Today's Game

Myles Turner is one of the best young big men in the NBA, but the Indiana Pacers center is far from a finished product. The former Texas product embodies what it means to be a center in today’s game, at least on the offensive end. He is a polished talent who can make a difference both inside the paint and on the perimeter. However, he hasn’t been playing as dominant as he could be for the Eastern Conference franchise.

The numbers don’t lie, and the eye isn’t kind to Turner, either. There aren’t double facets when it comes to what the 24-year-old center has done and could do for Indiana. Turner needs to step it up for the Pacers if they want to make a deep postseason run, especially now that Malcolm Brogdon has tested positive for COVID-19.

Areas For Improvement

As stated above, Turner has all the tools to be a dominant force in today’s NBA. He has the size (6'11", 250 lbs), the agility and awareness to keep up with the pace in the league, which is something that is becoming more and more complicated for big men across the league. There are several areas where Turner could improve his game. The first one is his rebounding, as he has only averaged 6.5 rebounds in 2019-20.

Turner ranks 41th in the NBA in rebounds per game and he also sits 23rd among centers in the category. To put things into perspective, players such as Russell Westbrook, LeBron James, Jayson Tatum and Kawhi Leonard average more boards per game than Turner. That can’t happen for an agile big man.

That’s not the only area where Turner could make some adjustments, though. He is averaging 11.8 points per game in 2019-2020 and has taken another step back this season. In fact, this has been his worst scoring season since his rookie year -- he averaged only 10.3 points per game, but played under 23 minutes a night. To complicate things even further, Turner is also shooting a career-worst 45.1 percent from the field. His tendency to shoot threes -- and the fact that he’s making them at a below-average 33.6 clip -- conspires against him as well.

Dark Horse Potential

The fifth-year pro will continue shooting the ball from deep, especially if the Pacers continue to rely on Domantas Sabonis down low. The issue lies in the efficiency, as Turner was coming off back-to-back years in which he shot over 35.0 percent from three-point range. Such hasn’t been the case this season.

Ultimately, the Pacers have enough pieces to potentially make a deep postseason run, with or without Brogdon. But the main wild card will be Turner’s performance. If the 24-year-old big man steps it up for Indiana, then the Pacers could be a dark horse in a surprisingly crowded Eastern Conference playoff picture.
