The BetQL Model is smart, so believe me when I say that this thing wins quite a lot. Every so often, it comes up with percentages like this telling us how likely and how often a team will make the playoffs in the upcoming year. Well, the model thinks Steph Curry and Klay Thompson will have a tough time getting their Warriors in position to make the postseason in 2021. It's giving Golden State just a 47.1% chance to reach the playoffs, which means that they fail to do so in over half of the model's projections.
I'll explain my opinion in the next section a bit, but let's stay focused here on the model and why it might think the battle will be a tough one for the Warriors. For one, the Western Conference is still the Western Conference. Seemingly always the deeper and more talented side of the league, the West will give Golden State fits each time out. They will have to play great basketball on a consistent basis in order to keep up with the other Western playoff contenders. Secondly, do we really know if this team will stay healthy? Klay Thompson has proven that he can't stay on the court anymore, and even Steph has had his problems with injury lately. Draymond Green is still good, but he's not quite the player he once was.
There are many challenges facing Golden State next season, and the model thinks that there is a higher chance they miss out on the postseason.
At 47.1%, we're basically looking at a 50/50 shot here for Golden State to make the playoffs. They will be back to full strength when the start of the season rolls around, barring any injuries of course, and will be looking to make a run yet again. While the Western Conference is tough, the Warriors have a top-of-the-line coach in Steve Kerr, and a trifecta of star players in Steph Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green.
Last year's top draft pick James Wiseman will be returning to their starting line-up, to go along with Andrew Wiggins. I know, Wiggins has been a disappointment, but he is not that bad of a player. He can play at both ends of the floor, and is solid either way. Wiseman flashed his potential last year, and it will be interesting to see if he can grow on it in Year 2. Veteran forward Otto Porter Jr. will also be a good addition to the team. He can provide them with another reliable scorer on the outside, and a nice defender on the wing.
There is talent here, and where there is talent, the playoffs can be made. That, and it is hard to doubt Steph at this point. That's a big reason why most sportsbooks have them at -600 to make the playoffs right now.
