Heading into Friday, most teams are just over the halfway point of the regular season. In what has been quite a whacky start to the basketball season from a betting perspective, let’s take a look at three of the craziest trends. Beware: your mind might be blown!

1. The Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers are a combined 40-3 straight-up at home and 20-27 on the road. Jimmy Butler and the Heat have gone 20-1 in Miami, but just 11-12 away from South Beach. When Butler was signed, many noted that he fit into Miami’s “culture”. Clearly he, along with his new teammates, has embraced and embodied a gritty style of play in front of their home fans. But, they’ve inexplicably struggled on the road. Meanwhile, Ben Simmons and the Sixers have gone 21-2 in front of their home fans, but just 9-15 on the road. Although Joel Embiid’s latest injury certainly derailed some of Philly’s progress, they’ve still been able to rack up W’s at home while struggling to get over the hump on the road. Once Embiid returns, it’ll be important to monitor the team’s road woes heading towards the playoffs.

2. The over has gone 27-16 (62.8%) in San Antonio Spurs games this season. That’s tied for the highest hit rate in the NBA (with the Heat). All year, opening totals have factored in Gregg Popovich’s typical style of play: slow and half-court oriented. However, it seems like the aging legend took the offseason to realize that the NBA is trending towards a quicker style of play. Last season, the Spurs ranked 22nd in pace. This year, they rank 12th. That’s not a coincidence; it’s by design.

3. The Oklahoma City Thunder are 30-15 (66.7%) overall against the spread, including 17-5 (77.3%) on the road and 20-7 (74.1%) as an underdog. They lead the entire NBA in those three areas. You’d be lying if you said you saw this coming. After trading away Russell Westbrook and then realizing that no one else wanted to take on Chris Paul’s contract, the Thunder made the decision to stick with their current roster and try to win every night. Paul, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dennis Schroder make up one of the most productive backcourt trios in the entire NBA and have made up the majority of OKC’s scoring while Steven Adams has made an impact with his typical bruising style on the inside. Simply put, they’ve been the most trustworthy team in the Association against the spread, which is simply shocking considering what their outlook was heading into the season.
