  • The White Sox just clinched the AL Central, but there are still many questions to answer, among them the starting pitching rotation and where everyone will fit

  • Many will go to Lucas Giolito being the most important player of the playoff rotation because he will need to regain his dominant form from last year. While that is true, I would argue that Lance Lynn's health and effectiveness is even more crucial to their World Series aspirations.

  • The White Sox are currently +750 to win the World Series, per DraftKings.

Lance Lynn Is The Ace

I know, most of you fellow White Sox fans won't be happy about me saying this because Lucas Giolito is awesome and a great part of the clubhouse. He's also a great pitcher, but this season, it was newcomer Lance Lynn who really grew into the ace of this squad while Giolito had some struggles. That is not to say that he wasn't effective, he has a 3.70 ERA and 1.12 WHIP, which are both still very good.

However, the White Sox need a true ace with a minuscule ERA if they want to win a World Series. Lance Lynn has been that guy this season.

Lynn has been a consistently spectacular pitcher for the entire season, only having minor hiccups along the way to a 2.47 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. He has been the most valuable pitcher on the staff with a 5.0 WAR, followed closely by the upstart Carlos Rodon with a 4.4 WAR.

I love me some Lucas, but you just have to look at the numbers. Lynn is the ace of the staff, and him continuing to be will be crucial for the Sox going forward into the playoffs.

Why Lynn Is So Crucial

Lynn is currently injured and might get another start before the playoffs actually begin, but it will be imperative that he remains the pitcher he was for most of 2021.

The White Sox need a true ace like him, someone who can eat up innings and keep the bullpen fresh, now more than ever. The bullpen has been, inconsistent, at best for pretty much the entire season.

They never really have lived up to expectations, even with stars like Liam Hendriks and Craig Kimbrel closing ballgames. Kimbrel has been a disaster since being acquired by the Sox at the trade deadline. He has an ERA over 5.00 in his short time with the White Sox, and he will need to be better.

Lynn did not play well towards the very late part of this season, and much of that is why he is on the injury list right now. At least, we have to hope that's why. In the postseason, you need a pitcher like him, and that is why they acquired him in the first place.

Maybe not to be the ace, but to be good and eat innings. Without that, the bullpen will get taxed because of the inconsistency of pitchers like Giolito and Dallas Keuchel. They need him back at 100 percent.
