Quality Pitcher's Duel

Wednesday’s schedule kicks off in a big way with a potential pitcher’s duel between Atlanta Braves starter Max Fried and Cincinnati Reds ace Trevor Bauer. While Bauer is the Cy Young frontrunner in the National League, Fried wasn’t far behind after going 7-0 during the regular-season. With the Reds struggling to score runs for most of the season, they need Bauer to shut down a potent Atlanta lineup and steal Game 1 if they hope to advance.

A Rare Appearance

Who would have thought before the season that the Miami Marlins would be in the postseason? After half the roster was put on the COVID IL early in the season, it seemed even more unlikely. However, Don Mattingly’s team found a way, and now Miami’s young pitchers have a chance to shock the Chicago Cubs in the first-round. Keep in mind that the Marlins haven’t played in the postseason since winning the 2003 World Series. On their way, they overcame a 3-1 deficit against the Cubs in the infamous Steve Bartman NLCS.

Ace Material?

Before the season, the Minnesota Twins expected Jose Berrios to be their ace, but he’s had wild ups and downs this year. Two starts ago, the 26-year-old pitched 6.0 shutout innings against the Chicago Cubs only to give up four runs, including two home runs, against the Reds in his final start of the season. Berrios is now under pressure to deliver an ace-like performance in the postseason against the reigning AL Champion Houston Astros.

Oh Canada

The Toronto Blue Jays are one of the biggest surprises in this year’s postseason. Part of the reason they made it is because they spent big money this winter to sign Hyun-jin Ryu, who has delivered. Of course, now they need Ryu to perform like an ace against the Tampa Bay Rays, who send Tyler Glasnow to the mound. It’s up to Ryu to out-pitch Glasnow so that a lead isn't handed to Tampa’s incredible bullpen.
