Hammering The Over (August 19)

If the last four games are an indicator, this game should go way over the total

⦿ The Nationals have scored 49 runs over their last four games and will square off against a struggling Trevor Williams.

⦿ Joe Ross has been solid over his last three starts, but sports a season-long 5.91 ERA, which is good news for the Pirates' run-scoring hopes.

⦿ The game opened with a 10-run total.

Nationals (67-56) @ Pirates (51-72)

Joe Ross vs. Trevor Williams

O/U: 10

Things are looking up for the Washington Nationals these days.

The Nats currently own the first wildcard spot in the National League standings, injured star pitcher Max Scherzer is expected back on the mound soon, and they get to play a four-game series vs. the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates starting Monday night at PNC Park.

Washington, which has won seven of its past 10 games, is batting .352 and has scored an eye-popping 49 runs over its past four games, including 16 vs. Milwaukee on Sunday when they matched a club record by hitting eight home runs.

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh scored just once in its past two games, back-to-back losses to the Cubs. Nevertheless, the Pirates average 4.84 runs per game at home, second most among NL Central teams.

There have been numerous heroes for the Nats at the plate lately, including Trea Turner, who has reached base safely in 25 straight games, Victor Robles, who has a seven-game hitting streak, and Adam Eaton, who is batting .425 over his past 10 games. Look for that trio (and all the Nats hitters) to feast against Pirates pitchers, who have combined for a 5.10 earned-run average at home, the second highest among NL teams.

Pirates right-hander Trevor Williams has been roughed up since returning from the Injured List in late June. Opponents have batted .316 against him since then, and his ERA has ballooned from 3.33 to 5.25. He seems an unlikely candidate to cool the red-hot Nats on Monday.

Meanwhile, although Washington’s Joe Ross has been solid over his last three starts, he sports a season-long 5.91 ERA over 22 appearances (four starts).
