St. Louis Cardinals Season Review/Second Half Preview

What a disaster the 2021 season has become for the Cardinals. This season was supposed to be one of revitalization after the acquisition of Nolan Arenado from the Colorado Rockies. Combining him with Paul Goldschmidt was supposed to create a real dynamic duo in St. Louis that was supposed to elevate an average team into real contention. At the All-Star break, the Cardinals are 44-46 and sinking like the Titanic. The offense hasn’t been great, but the pitching has been what’s holding the team back. Ace Jack Flaherty is on the injured list and not coming back soon enough to fix a staff that has been bad during the first half of the year.

St. Louis is fourth in a very poor NL Central division that the Milwaukee Brewers have almost already locked up. Their pitching staff has been dominant, while the second-place Cincinnati Reds look to gain ground and unseat them. The Cards are tied with the Chicago Cubs for third technically, but the Cubs own the tie-breaker right now. The only team they are above is the Pittsburgh Pirates, which isn’t very hard to do at all considering they are one of the worst teams in baseball.

If the Cardinals want to turn things around, they will need to improve their pitching and get more production out of their supporting players and outfielders. Otherwise, they could look to trade some pieces away at the deadline after a failed season that could get worse.
