Quick-Hitters

  • Just two starts into the 2020 season, Jacob deGrom already looks like the frontrunner for this year’s Cy Young, opening the season at +300, according to DraftKings, the best odds in the National League.

  • deGrom owns a 1.64 ERA, conceding just four hits and two walks while striking out 12 in 11.0 innings of work.

  • While on a strict pitch count, deGrom gave the Mets five dominant innings on opening day.

  • Despite one poor inning against the Red Sox, deGrom allowed just two runs over six innings in his second start, leaving the game with the lead.

Same Old Jake

It was fair to ask questions about the preparedness of every pitcher after an abbreviated summer camp. However, deGrom looked like his typical self on opening day. Fresh off winning the National League Cy Young in each of the past two years, deGrom was dominant as he began the season against the Braves, a team that has three players who won the Silver Slugger award in 2019. On his first handful of pitches, deGrom hit either 99 or 100 mph on the radar gun and didn’t slow down much from there. While he was only allowed to throw 72 pitches, deGrom made it through five innings, giving up just one hit while striking out eight hitters.

Good on a Bad Night

By deGrom’s standards, he had an off day in his second start of the year against the Boston Red Sox. After giving up two runs in the fourth inning, deGrom saw his 31-inning scoreless streak come to an end despite hitting 101 mph on the radar gun twice in the first inning. Nevertheless, deGrom ended up pitching six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, leaving the game with the Mets in the lead. It was the kind of performance just about any team would take from their starter any day of the week. Through his first two starts of the season, deGrom owns a 1.64 ERA, conceding just four hits and two walks while striking out 12 in 11.0 innings of work. Without question, those are numbers that make him an early frontrunner for the Cy Young once again.

Take Two

The Braves will get a second crack at deGrom when the Mets conclude a four-game series in Atlanta Monday night. After being shut out by the Mets on opening day, thanks in part to deGrom’s five scoreless innings, Atlanta has emerged as one of the best offensive teams in the National League. Even with Ronald Acuna and Ozzie Albies, two of the team’s Silver Slugger winners from 2019, getting off to a slow start, Marcell Ozuna and Dansby Swanson have helped to pick up the slack. The Braves have already had 14 and 11 run performances against the Mets. The rest of New York’s pitching staff has struggled to contain the Braves, but perhaps the two-time reigning Cy Young winner can change that.
