Jacob deGrom Continues His Historic Dominance For Mets

Batters stand almost no shot when he's on the mound

Jacob deGrom has put up some eye-popping numbers since his return to the mound, and it sure doesn't look like he'll be letting up any time soon.

After allowing just two hits while striking out 10 in six innings against the Phillies over the weekend, deGrom has now given up just six total hits, with 28 strikeouts and just one walk in 16.2 innings for the Mets -- and that's not even the craziest stat you'll see either:

Almost as many swings and misses as total balls called on the two-time Cy Young winner is absolutely wild. These are the kind of performances that send batters into a mental fog before they even step into the batter's box, knowing what deGrom can do with every pitch.

Obviously, sitting at +50000 to win the Cy Young, deGrom is all but out of the Cy Young race after missing so much time. Had he been throwing like this all year, we can all agree that even Sandy Alcantara, the heavy favorite at -275, would be a distant second to deGrom over a full 2022 season.

Those 28 Ks for deGrom come on 56 total batters faced and, according to ESPN Stats & Information, that 50% strikeout percentage is the highest by any pitcher through his first three starts of a season since the mound moved to its current distance in 1893. Also, deGrom already had the previous high when he struck out 48.6 percent of the batters he faced to start last year.

Even if this year's Cy Young may be out of reach with such a late start to his season, deGrom's start coupled with Max Scherzer's dominance sure bodes well for a Mets team trying to shake off years of letdowns.

With the Braves keeping things close in the NL East (+800 to win the division), the Mets (-1200) may have just found their edge to keep away another late-season collapse.
