Postseason Race

The strangest MLB season ever winds up Sunday and there are still some questions that need to be answered as far as who makes the playoffs. As we head to the final day of the regular-season on Sunday, the final Wild Card spot in the National League remains undecided. The St. Louis Cardinals are in prime position to take it, but they must close the deal with a win at home against the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Cardinals, as of Saturday morning, lead the race for the last spot. The Brewers still had an outside chance depending on how they fared Saturday. Meanwhile, the Philadelphia Phillies are lurking and the San Francisco Giants are in the thick of things. The Cardinals control their own destiny if they close out the final two games of the season with wins against Milwaukee over the weekend.

Pitching Matchup

The final game of the regular-season pits Brewers lefty Brett Anderson against the Cardinals big lefty Austin Gomber. Gomber has been impressive in his three starts this season, going 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA. In his last start, Gomber pitched 6.0 scoreless innings and allowed only four hits in a 5-0 win over the Kansas City Royals.

Anderson is 4-3 on the year with a 4.00 ERA. He's coming off a solid performance in his last outing, allowing just one earned run and four hits over 6.0 innings of work in a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds.

Controlling Their Own Destiny

St. Louis blasted Milwaukee in the first game of this series on Friday night, 9-1. Neither of these teams will be confused with the ‘27 New York Yankees when it comes to offense, but the Brewers offense has really struggled down the stretch. In the last six games, Milwaukee has only averaged 2.0 runs per game. If Gomber throws like he did in his last outing, he should have no trouble beating a Brewers team that will probably have been eliminated by Sunday. With a potential playoff berth at stake, the Cardinals should take care of business and win the finale.
