The Atlanta Braves took Game 1 of the World Series over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night with a 6-2 win. And Matt Weyrich from NBC Sports Washington joined BetMGM Tonight to discuss the Braves’ 1-0 lead in the series.

Trysta Krick, Quinton Mayo and Ryan Horvat spoke with Weyrich about the Braves’ success in this first game and how the Braves took advantage of Framber Valdez's weaknesses.

Braves Jump On Framber Valdez

“It definitely has been a surprising start for the Braves,” Weyrich said. “I came in feeling pretty good about Framber Valdez. I think he’s been a pretty underrated starter this year and obviously had that huge start in the ALCS against the (Boston) Red Sox that really turned the tide in that series.

“But we saw early on the Braves were jumping all over him,” he continued. "Jorge Solar becoming the first player in World Series history to hit a lead off home run in the top of the first inning of World Series Game 1. That’s over 100 World Series’ ever for that to happen.

“But I think the early trend that you had to jump on early was, we saw him leaving the fastball up and Valdez is a ground ball pitcher, he’s not somebody who’s really going to rack up a ton of strikeouts in a game so you know he’s on his best stuff when that sinker and that curveball are low in the zone, out of the zone, even. And that just wasn’t happening early and the Braves capitalized," Weyrich continued.

Most Surprising Thing About Both Teams

“I think the Astros are just exactly what we thought they were before the scandal,” Weyrich said. “ … For this team to come out with all this adversity and to continue to just do what they do. I think Dusty Baker was the perfect hire to kind of steer this organization through all that controversy and they’ve been able to return to the ALCS in back-to-back years and here they are in the World Series … They just keep on chugging.

“As for the Braves, they had to completely re-work their roster,” he continued. “ … We kind of counted them out … And here they are making one of these miracle runs throughout the postseason.”
