A Healthy Yoenis Cespedes Gives The Mets Hope

With the MLB adding the DH to the NL, Cespedes could give them an edge

  • The New York Mets have their DH set, unlike most NL teams.

  • Yoenis Cespedes played just 38 games in 2018 and missed all of 2019, but his track record is that of a middle-of-the-order slugger.

  • With most of his recent injuries being foot and leg related, Cespedes should stay healthy at DH, allowing the Mets to keep the rest of their sluggers in the lineup.

  • Cespedes provides a much-needed right-handed bat to complement the likes of lefties Robinson Cano, Michael Conforto, and Jeff McNeil.

  • At +2000 on DraftKings, the Mets are anything but sleepers to capture a title in 2020.

Once a Slugger, Always a Slugger

It’s not difficult to see that Yoenis Cespedes is a huge X-factor for the New York Mets in 2020. He missed all of 2019 after undergoing surgery on both heels, followed by breaking his ankle in a freak accident on his ranch. Cespedes was also limited to just 38 games in 2018 and 81 games in 2017 due to injury.

He was a huge part of New York’s success during the second half of the 2015 season when the Mets reached the World Series. This was also the case in 2016 when they qualified for the postseason as a Wild Card team. Even without him in 2019, the Mets had a solid offensive team with Rookie Of The Year Pete Alonso taking center stage. Adding Cespedes and his career .826 OPS to the middle of the lineup will give the Mets another hitter who’s a home run threat every time he steps in the batter’s box.

Adding A DH Is No Issue For New York

With the National League having a full-time DH during the 2020 season, Cespedes is the ideal candidate to fill that role. Despite being a former Gold Glove winner, his history of hamstring issues combined with his heel and ankle injuries could make him a liability in left field and put him at risk of injury. The Mets can insert Cespedes into the DH spot most days to get his bat in the lineup without worrying about him having to play defense. While the Mets would like to use other players in the DH spot some days, they have enough versatile players on their roster to rotate and keep players fresh, as the season will have 60 games and just six off days.

A More Balanced Lineup

Outside of Alonso, most of New York’s best hitters hit from the left side. Brandon Nimmo figures to hit near the top of the order with Jeff McNeil, Michael Conforto, and Robinson Cano surrounding Alonso in the heart of the order. However, Cespedes in the DH spot provides another right-handed power hitter, pushing J.D. Davis and Wilson Ramos to the bottom-third of the order.

Most days, the Mets will be able to alternate righties and lefties throughout the middle of their lineup. Given the new rules about relievers facing at least three batters, alternating hitters like that is even more important, making Cespedes’ right-handed bat necessary in giving the Mets one of the deepest and most potent lineups in the National League in 2020.
