The hard-throwing right hander only appeared in six games in 2022, with a 2-3 record and 4.50 ERA. It wasn't much of a showing for him, as he looked to come back from another lost injury season in 2021. That year, he appeared in only five games, but was 1-1 with a minuscule 2.74 ERA. The potential has always been there with May, as he showed in his first two years in the league. In 2020 during the shortened COVID season, he started 10 games and had an ERA of 2.57, and was one of the best pitchers in baseball.

His problem has always been staying healthy, which he has failed to do throughout his time in the majors. However, when he is on, he's really good.

Seemingly fully recovered from Tommy John surgery and ready for the 2023 season, the flamethrower is anticipated to be in consideration as a back-end starter this year. We saw the flashes of brilliance last season, despite him only playing in six games. Against the Marlins in his first game back from Tommy John surgery in 2021, he delivered five innings of scoreless baseball while allowing just one hit and striking out nine in a 7-0 Dodgers romp. Against the Giants, May cruised through five innings of no-hit ball on the road mound. The potential has always been there, and we will be banking on it coming alive in 2023.

It's a longshot, but it is one that I think has a lot of value if May can actually come back and play like the player that we know he can be. He's dominant when he's healthy, so it will be all about getting him the starts and avoiding the injury bug. Remember, this is just a sprinkle here, no large bets. The guy could get injured again and not play a single game, we don't know.

I think betting on him to be the NL Comeback Player of the Year would also be a smart bet if you can find a book that has odds on that right now.
