Cubs Injuries
Player Image
Tyler ChatwoodCHC | RP
Throwing off mound Tuesday
Chatwood faced a slight setback in the middle of September after his strained forearm didn't respond well to his throwing program. However, he threw a bullpen session Saturday and is expected to pitch off the mound once again Tuesday. It's still unknown whether the right-hander will be available for the Cubs during the postseason.

Player Image
Brandon MorrowCHC | RP
Recovering from minor procedure
Though Morrow doesn't expect to miss much time after another setback with his right elbow, he wasn't on track to be ready for Opening Day in late July, which likely explains why the Cubs released him from his minor-league deal Wednesday. Set to turn 36 years old later this month and having not pitched in a regular-season game in the majors or minors since July 15, 2018, Morrow's career looks to be hanging by a thread.

Player Image
Brad WieckCHC | RP
Moved to 45-day IL
Wieck faced a setback in his recovery process recently, and he'll miss significant time as a result. While the left-hander's hamstring was reportedly feeling better, he was set back due to left knee soreness. It's unclear whether Wieck will return to the majors before the end of the regular season. Hernan Perez's contract was selected Tuesday in a corresponding move.

Daniel DescalsoCHC | 2B
Shut down with ankle sprain
No reports surfaced in summer camp suggesting that Descalso was tending to a major injury, but the utility man will now be on the shelf for at least the next month and half while he recovers from the ankle sprain. His absence likely paved the way for both Jason Kipnis and Nico Hoerner to crack the Opening Day roster.
60IL
Player Image
Manuel RodriguezCHC | RP
Moved to 45-day IL
The transaction appears to be procedural, as Rodriguez was previously optioned to Double-A Tennessee back in spring training after he sustained a right biceps strain March 1. The Cubs haven't relayed where exactly Rodriguez stands in his recovery from the injury months later, but provided he doesn't need any offseason procedures, he should report to spring training in 2021 at full strength.

Player Image
James NorwoodCHC | RP
Shifts to 45-day IL
The 26-year-old threw a bullpen session a week after landing on the injured list at the start of August, but he apparently needs more time to recover. Norwood doesn't have an official timeline for his return, but he won't be eligible to be activated until mid-September.

Player Image
Kevin NewmanPIT | SS
Knee injury ends season
The injury isn't believed to be especially significant, but the timing of Newman's placement on the IL means his 2020 campaign is over. The 27-year-old took a big step back this season, with his OPS dropping 242 from his 2019 mark. Newman also failed to record a stolen base after going 16-for-24 on steal attempts last season. Adam Frazier and Erik Gonzalez will likely serve as Pittsburgh's everyday starters in the middle infield the rest of the way.

Player Image
Tyler BashlorPIT | RP
Placed on injured list
Bashlor allowed one run on two hits and one walk over two-thirds of an inning Wednesday, and he'll now be sidelined at least 10 days with a back issue. With just over two weeks remaining in the regular season, it's unclear whether the right-hander will return to action in 2020, especially with the Pirates out of playoff contention. Left-hander Austin Davis was recalled to take Bashlor's place in the bullpen.
OUT
Player Image
Felipe VázquezPIT | RP
Facing 21 new charges
Police seized an iPhone and a MacBook Pro they say belonged to Vazquez, and a search of those devices led to the additional charges; 10 counts of child pornography, 10 counts of unlawful contact with a minor and a single charge of corruption of minors. Vazquez was originally arrested in September for engaging in sexual activity with a minor and was subsequently placed on the restricted list by MLB. He is being held without bail.
OUT
Player Image
Jason MartinPIT | CF
Placed on injured list
Martin's playing time was limited this season, and he went hitless with two walks and four strikeouts during nine at-bats. He'll miss the remainder of the season due to his injury with just under a week remaining in the 2020 campaign.
OUT
Player Image
Kyle CrickPIT | RP
heads to IL
Crick will have a chance to return just before the regular season concludes, though the club has yet to release a timetable for his return. Mitch Keller was called up to take Crick's place and will start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the Reds.
OUT
Player Image
Hector NoesíPIT | RP
Opts out of 2020 season
The right-hander struggled over 27.2 innings in Miami last season with an 8.46 ERA, but he nonetheless earned a spot in Pittsburgh's 60-man player pool. Noesi will instead sit out the 2020 campaign for the benefit of his family.
OUT
Player Image
Kevin KramerPIT | LF
Lands on IL
He underwent hip surgery in March that will sideline him for 4-to-6 months, so it's possible he won't play at all this season. Kramer was set to compete for a bench role under normal circumstances.
60IL
Player Image
Phillip EvansPIT | 3B
Set for surgery
Evans landed on the 45-day injured list earlier in the month after sustaining a broken jaw and a concussion in a collision with teammate Gregory Polanco. While it was originally thought that he wouldn't require surgery, it turns out the 27-year-old will need a wire put in his jaw. Evans is eligible to return at the end of September, should he prove ready.
60IL
Player Image
Keone KelaPIT | RP
Shifts to 45-day IL
Kela wasn't a candidate to rejoin the Pirates before Sunday's season finale in Cleveland, so his move to the 45-day IL was merely designed to open up a spot on the 40-man roster for catcher Andrew Susac. Viewed by many as the frontrunner to close for the Pirates this season, Kela was limited to just three appearances, as he missed time after testing positive for COVID-19 before being shut down with forearm tightness in August. He didn't record a save in any of those outings.
60IL
Player Image
Yacksel RíosPIT | RP
Moved to 45-day IL
Rios suffered a setback earlier in September and was shut down as a result. He'll officially be sidelined for the remainder of the season, and it's unclear whether he'll be ready for spring training in 2021 as he continues to recover from right shoulder inflammation. The right-hander made three relief appearances in 2020, posting a 0.00 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over four innings.
60IL
Player Image
Chris ArcherPIT | SP
Not throwing yet
The Pirates will continue to check in with Archer periodically over the next two months while he recovers from season-ending thoracic outlet syndrome, but he'll likely be on his own in the rehab process come November, when Pittsburgh will almost certainly decline his $11 million team option for 2021. Even if his recovery from surgery proceeds as anticipated, the two-time All-Star will likely have to settle for a low-cost, one- or two-year deal after posting a 5.19 ERA and 1.41 WHIP in 2019.
60IL
Player Image
Anthony AlfordPIT | CF
Should be ready for spring training
Alford hit .214 with two home runs, three steals and an 8:1 K:BB in 28 MLB at-bats prior to suffering the fracture. His two home runs came over his final eight games. The Pirates have a somewhat unsettled outfield depth chart heading into 2021, so while Alford will have a chance to earn playing time, he will be competing with a host of other hungry young players, some of whom have not yet debuted, like Jared Oliva and Travis Swaggerty.
60IL
Player Image
Pablo ReyesPIT | LF
Leaves team after birth of child
Thanks to the expanded September roster, the Pirates won't have to place Reyes on the paternity list, though he'll still likely report back to the club after taking the normal 1-to-3 days off to spend time with his family. Before leaving the team, Reyes had fallen into a semi-regular role in the outfield while Starling Marte (wrist) has been unavailable.
SUS
Player Image
Nick BurdiPIT | RP
Avoids surgery for now
Burdi picked up his first career save this year but lasted just three appearances before his frustratingly frequent injury problems resurfaced. While it's certainly a positive that he's avoided surgery, his latest issue is nevertheless serious enough that he's already been ruled out for the remainder of the year. Whether or not he's at full strength to being the 2021 campaign remains to be seen.
60IL
Player Image
Clay HolmesPIT | RP
Transferred to 45-day IL
Holmes has been sidelined since the end of July with a right forearm strain. The team wasn't initially anticipating a very long absence, but the issue is evidently more serious than they thought. The 27-year-old will be eligible to return late in the 2020 campaign, but it wouldn't be surprising if the team shut him down for the remainder of the season so he can fully recover. Right-hander Nick Tropeano was claimed off waivers and optioned to the alternate training site to take Holmes' spot on the 40-man roster.
60IL
Player Image
Michael FelizPIT | RP
Done for season
Pittsburgh has lost two key pieces of the bullpen for the remainder of the season in recent days, as Nick Burdi (elbow) was also shut down for good after moving to the 45-day IL on Wednesday. The Pirates diagnosed Feliz with a strained right forearm, an injury that is often a precursor to Tommy John surgery. With the team having yet to announce that any surgery will be in the cards for Feliz, he'll presumably treat the injury through rest and rehab with the hope of being back to full health for spring training in 2021.
60IL
Player Image
Jameson TaillonPIT | SP
Tosses 25 pitches
Taillon isn't expected to return to game action before the 2021 season as he continues to recover from his second Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has appeared to shorten his arm action recently, creating optimism that he could still pitch for the Pirates following his return to full health.
60IL
Player Image
Edgar SantanaPIT | RP
Moves to restricted list
Pittsburgh made the move shortly after it was announced Sunday that Santana had received an 80-game suspension following his positive test for the performance-enhancing substance Boldenon. The transaction opens up an extra spot on the 40-man roster for Santana and spells an official end to the right-hander's season, as he won't be an option with the Pirates only playing 60 games in 2020. He'll serve out the final 20 games of his suspension at the start of the 2021 season.
SUS
Player Image
Luke MailePIT | C
Shifts to IL
Maile was ruled out for 10-to-12 weeks after undergoing surgery July 17 to repair a fractured index finger on his throwing hand, so the transaction comes as little surprise. The Pirates will proceed with Jacob Stallings and John Ryan Murphy as their two catchers on the Opening Day roster with Maile sidelined.
