Pirates Injuries
Player Image
Cole TuckerPIT
Done for season
Tucker apparently picked up a left knee injury earlier in the week; while the issue isn't serious enough to require surgery, it will keep him sidelined for the final five games of the season. The 23-year-old rookie appeared in 56 games with the Pirates this season, slashing .211/.266/.361 with 10 doubles, three triples and two home runs.
OUT
Player Image
Colin MoranPIT
Season over due to injury
He hasn't played since Tuesday. Erik Gonzalez continues to start in Moran's place. He finishes the 2019 season with a slash line of .277/.322/.429 with 13 homers and 80 RBI in 503 plate appearances. Moran is the front runner for the third base job heading into 2020, especially with the team keeping top prospect Ke'Bryan Hayes in the minors during September.
OUT
Player Image
Josh BellPIT
won't return this season
Bell was hoping to return before the end of the season, but the Pirates opted to play it safe and shut him down with just five games left and no chance at making the playoffs. The first baseman will be eligible for arbitration for the first time in 2020 after slashing .277/.367/.569 with career highs in doubles (37), home runs (37) and RBI (116).

Player Image
Starling MartePIT
done for season
With just five games left in the season and the Pirates out of playoff contention, the team opted to shut Marte and a few others down. The outfielder appeared in 132 games, slashing .295/.342/.503 while setting career highs in home runs (23), RBI (82) and runs scored (97). He also swiped 25 bases. Marte isn't expected to require surgery and should be ready by the start of spring training.

Player Image
Felipe VázquezPIT
placed on restricted list
Vazquez has been charged in Lee County, Florida with one count of computer pornography, solicitation of a child and one count of providing obscene material to minors. Pirates president Frank Coonelly released a statement saying, "Today we were made aware of an active law enforcement investigation involving Felipe Vazquez and his subsequent arrest. We take this matter, and these charges in particular, extremely seriously. We have informed the Commissioner's Office of the investigation and arrest. The Commissioner's Office will immediately place Felipe Vazquez on administrative leave (and, as a result, restricted list) pursuant to the Joint MLB/MLBPA policy. We need to be respectful to all involved and the ongoing legal proceeding. As a result, the organization, our staff and players cannot comment any further at this time."
OUT
Player Image
Bryan ReynoldsPIT
Ruled out Sunday
Reynolds tweaked his hamstring running out a grounder Wednesday against the Cubs. He finishes with an impressive slash line of .314/.377/.503 with 16 homers and 68 RBI in 546 plate appearances. While the 23-year-old may not garner much NL ROY support, he's proven to be one of the bigger surprises in fantasy.
OUT
Player Image
Elias DiazPIT
Shut down for season
Diaz has been sidelined since Saturday with a right knee injury and simply won't have enough time to return, leaving Jacob Stallings and Steve Baron to finish out the season as Pittsburgh's primary catchers. Across 101 games with the Pirates this season, Diaz compiled a .241/.296/.307 slash line with two home runs and 28 RBI.
OUT
Player Image
Geoff HartliebPIT
Undergoes surgery
No other details about the surgery were released, but the team said Hartlieb is expected to have a full recovery and be ready for spring training. The 25-year-old posted a 38:18 K:BB with a 9.00 ERA in 29 appearances this season.
OUT
Player Image
Jason MartinPIT
Lands on 60-day injured list
The move doesn't affect Martin's recovery time, as he's already been ruled out for the season with a dislocated left shoulder. The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for James Marvel, whose contract was purchased ahead of his big-league debut in a corresponding move.
60IL
Player Image
Gregory PolancoPIT
Health questions persist
General manager Neal Huntington said that additional surgery to his left shoulder remains a possibility. "As complicated as his first surgery was, the challenges that we've had coming back through that, we can't ever rule it out," Huntington noted. "They may need to try to get in there." The organization is expected to consider both internal and external options for right field during the offseason, given the uncertainty surrounding Polanco.
60IL
Player Image
Lonnie ChisenhallPIT
Remains without timeline
Chisenhall has been on the Pirates' injured list all season, initially as the result of a fractured right index finger before the calf issues cropped up in late April and mid-May while he was on minor-league rehab assignments. The Pirates shut him down after the second setback with the calf and allowed him to continue his rehab away from the team, but Tomczyk's comments suggest he hasn't made much meaningful progress in his recovery over the past three months. Pittsburgh has presumably ruled him out for the season and will likely part ways with Chisenhall when he hits free agency over the winter.
60IL
Player Image
Chris ArcherPIT
Shifts to 60-day IL
He has already been ruled out for the season, so this is simply a bookkeeping move to open up a spot on the 40-man roster. Archer showed some flashes prior to the injury, logging a 3.00 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 27 strikeouts in his final 18 innings, but his 5.19 ERA and 1.41 WHIP on the season should result in him being readily available late in drafts in 2020.
60IL
Player Image
Nick BurdiPIT
Set to ramp up activity
Initially placed on the injured list in April with a strained biceps, Burdi had resumed a throwing program in June before he was shut down again after developing symptoms of thoracic outlet syndrome, for which he required season-ending surgery. The procedure has apparently done its part to alleviate those symptoms over the past two months, so he'll now prepare to take the first meaningful step forward in the rehab process. The Pirates may not have a strong feel for Burdi's availability for the start of the 2020 season until reassessing his condition in spring training.
60IL
Player Image
Kyle CrickPIT
Lands on 60-day IL
Crick was already ruled out for the season after undergoing surgery on his right index finger, an injury he sustained Monday during an altercation with teammate Felipe Vazquez. The move creates an opening on the 40-man roster for Williams Jerez, who was claimed off waivers Friday.
60IL
Player Image
Chad KuhlPIT
Throws bullpen session
Kuhl continued his work back from Tommy John surgery and threw a 25-pitch bullpen session before Friday's game in Pittsburgh. He threw only fastballs and changeups but reported feeling good after the session. The next step in his progress will include a 30-pitch session in which he will also mix in his slider. While Kuhl will not pitch until the 2020 season, he may be a candidate for the rotation.
60IL
Player Image
Jameson TaillonPIT
undergoes Tommy John surgery
Taillon underwent flexor tendon repair surgery Tuesday, and it was determined during the procedure that the right-hander also required Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career. This is a brutal blow for the 27-year-old, who is expected to miss all of the 2020 season as a result. Prior to suffering the injury, Taillon posted a 4.10 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 30:8 K:BB in seven starts (37.1 innings) for the Pirates this season.
60IL
Player Image
Edgar SantanaPIT
Limited to bullpen sessions
The same applies to Chad Kuhl (elbow), who like Santana, is also working his way back from Tommy John surgery. Both pitchers previously left the door open for returning late in the 2019 season, but the fact that neither has advanced to facing live hitters yet suggests that may no longer be a realistic goal. Assuming he avoids any further setbacks in his rehab, however, Santana should be back to full strength or close to it next spring.

Cubs Injuries
Player Image
Tyler ChatwoodCHC
Battling sore shoulder
Chatwood hasn't pitched since Sept. 20 and the shoulder soreness is apparently responsible for his absence. The 29-year-old ends 2019 with a 3.76 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 74:37 K:BB across 76.2 innings.
OUT
Player Image
Kris BryantCHC
won't return this season
Bryant is dealing with a moderate right ankle sprain, and with the Cubs looking like a long shot to make the playoffs, the team has opted to shut down its star third baseman with a handful of games left. Across 147 appearances this season, Bryant compiled a .282/.383/.521 slash line with 31 home runs and 77 RBI.
OUT
Player Image
Javier BaezCHC
done for season
This isn't all too surprising, as the Cubs are essentially eliminated from the playoffs. The shortstop put together another stellar season for Chicago, slashing .281/.316/.531 with 29 home runs and 11 steals in 136 games. Nico Hoerner should continue to fill in at shortstop for Baez.

Brennen DavisCHC
Finger injury ends season
He has been hit on the hand multiple times this season, missing time in the middle of July and then landing on the shelf at the end of July. Davis was a two-sport athlete in high school - he had Division 1 offers to play basketball - and was seen as a project by most when the Cubs selected him with the No. 62 overall pick in 2018. However, Davis has proven to be a quick study, demonstrating an advanced approach last year in the AZL before maintaining that approach while tapping into power (.211 ISO) this year in the Midwest League. In addition to his power and plate skills, Davis is a plus runner. He has become a highly-coveted asset in dynasty leagues.

Brandon MorrowCHC
Shut down for season
Morrow reportedly suffered another setback and won't have enough time to get back up to speed before the end of the season. The oft-injured pitcher has been sidelined all year following November elbow surgery and a series of setbacks in his recovery efforts.

Player Image
Xavier CedenoCHC
Shifts to 60-day IL
Cedeno has already been on the shelf for over 60 days, so this appears to be simply procedural. The Cubs will be able to add David Phelps to the 40-man roster following Tuesday's move.

Moves rehab to Triple-A
Graveman made his first rehab outing Aug. 22 with the Arizona League Cubs, which was his first game action since undergoing Tommy John surgery in July 2018. The 28-year-old should still have significant work to do in his recovery, but the progression to game action is a significant step.
