Francisco CervelliPIT
Not yet cleared for games
There was a bit of a controversy in Pittsburgh last week when Cervelli refuted a report that he was done catching. It seems like he had a change of heart, although it's certainly understandable that he would consider giving up catching, given that this is at least his sixth concussion since 2011. He is without a timetable to return.

Gregory PolancoPIT
pulled off rehab assignment
Polanco will head back to Pittsburgh for further evaluation after suffering a setback during his rehab outing with Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday. Team trainer Todd Tomczyk relayed that the outfielder's shoulder is "strong and stable," however the team is still working to "figure out the details of what's causing the soreness and the discomfort in the back of the shoulder," according to Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Erik GonzalezPIT
Ready for new rehab stint
Gonzalez was pulled off his previous rehab stint with Indianapolis due to a hamstring injury, but he's ready to return to minor-league action after taking a handful of days to rest and recover. The 27-year-old has been sidelined since mid-April with a fractured clavicle.

Rookie DavisPIT
Resumes throwing
Davis has been on the injured list since early June, originally due to a blister. He was shut down for 10 days late in the month due to forearm tightness but appears to be working his way back now. His return timeline remains unclear.

Player Image
Lonnie ChisenhallPIT
Seeking another opinion
Chisenhall has been dealing with a calf injury since the end of April, and he's shown little improvement over the past month, prompting the outfielder to seek another opinion before moving forward with his recovery. This isn't an encouraging sign for Chisenhall, who was limited to just 29 big-league games last season due to a similar injury.

Keone KelaPIT
Could be activated this weekend
Manager Clint Hurdle noted Friday that Kela was "closing in on a return to the active roster," and the fact that the right-hander rejoined the team in Pittsburgh this weekend supported the skipper's claim. After striking out the side in 11 pitches during his final rehab appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Kela was spotted warming up in the bullpen during the Pirates' game Friday against the Phillies, even though he wasn't yet activated. The fact that he pitched on back-to-back days is nonetheless a sign that Kela has reached the final phase of his recovery from right shoulder inflammation, which has kept him on the shelf since May 6. Whenever he's formally reinstated, Kela should quickly reclaim a setup role ahead of All-Star closer Felipe Vazquez.

Nick BurdiPIT
Out for season after surgery
Burdi was already on the 60-day injured list due to a right biceps strain and resumed throwing earlier in June, but he'll now miss the remainder of the season after surgery. The 26-year-old is expected to be fully cleared for baseball activities by spring training.

Teams have slopes at their spring training complexes, which are essentially mini mounds. Kuhl is working his way back from Tommy John surgery, but is not expected to return until spring training of 2020.

Steven BraultPIT
Nearing mound work
Brault landed on the injured list prior to the All-Star break with a left shoulder strain. He resumed throwing Sunday and could be cleared to throw off a slope in the near future, at which point a timetable for his return could come into focus. In the meantime, Dario Agrazal will continue to fill in for Brault in the rotation.

Jameson TaillonPIT
Continues playing catch
Taillon will throw again Wednesday before resting Thursday, and he is expected to resume throwing everyday from that point. The 27-year-old has been on the injured list since early May with the flexor strain in his right elbow and still has significant work to do before making his way back to the majors.

Cubs Injuries
Player Image
Ben ZobristCHC
Still could return in 2019
The Cubs haven't offered any further clarity on a timeline for Zobrist to rejoin the team in the two weeks since Epstein's comments, so the veteran utility man can safely be ruled out through the All-Star break. Even if he feels ready to resume his career later this summer, Zobrist will likely require several simulated or minor-league games to pick up at-bats and make up for the lost time. The 38-year-old's ongoing absence should continue to open up more opportunities for the likes of David Bote, Addison Russell and Daniel Descalso.

Adbert AlzolayCHC

Alzolay was bothered by the issue during Wednesday's start, and the Cubs have elected to exercise caution by placing him on the shelf. He'll be eligible to return beginning July 26.

Player Image
Brandon MorrowCHC
Resumes facing hitters
Morrow has been on the shelf all season following November elbow surgery and has hit multiple snags in recovery efforts. The fact that the right-hander is in the midst of a throwing program is encouraging, but it's unclear when the Cubs will be ready to turn him loose for a minor-league rehab assignment. Realistically, Morrow won't be activated from the injured list until mid-August at the soonest and will likely be deployed in middle relief with Craig Kimbrel now handling closing duties for Chicago.

Player Image
Willson ContrerasCHC
Taking swings Saturday
Contreras' ability to face live pitching is an encouraging sign for his recovery from a strained arch muscle in his right foot, but the real test of his health will come when he resumes baserunning and catching duties. Until that happens, the Cubs likely won't be able to pinpoint a definitive target date for Contreras' return. In the meantime, Chicago will get by with a timeshare of Victor Caratini and Martin Maldonado at catcher.

Player Image
Allen WebsterCHC
Moves rehab to Double-A
Webster made two appearances with the Cubs' rookie-league affiliate over the last week but now makes his way to Double-A. The 29-year-old landed on the injured list in early May with radial nerve inflammation in his right arm and will be eligible to be activated off the 60-day injured list after the All-Star break.

Player Image
Xavier CedenoCHC
Pulled off rehab assignment
Cedeno was initially placed on the 10-day injured list in late May with what was labeled as left wrist inflammation, but a different injury looks to be the greater concern for him at this point. He's now been pulled off rehab assignments on two occasions and is without a clear timeline to resume throwing, much less make his way back from the IL.
10IL
Player Image
Kendall GravemanCHC
Heads to 60-day injured list
This is largely a procedural move, as Graveman is expected to miss most if not all of 2019 after undergoing Tommy John surgery in July of 2018. This move opens up a 40-man roster spot for the Cubs while Graveman rehabs his injury with the hope of joining the Cubs pitching staff at a later date.

Cole HamelsCHC
Scheduled for bullpen session
This will be the second bullpen of the week for Hamels, who also threw one on Wednesday and claimed that he felt great afterwards. The veteran left-hander, who has been out since June 29 with a left oblique strain, is still about a week or so away from rejoining the Cubs' rotation, Tony Andracki of NBC Sports Chicago reports. Prior to the injury, Hamels was 6-3 with a 2.98 ERA and a 97:35 K:BB over 99.2 innings.

Continuing rehab stint after break
Edwards began the rehab assignment last Monday and will stay at Triple-A for another outing or two to help him "sharpen" up. The 27-year-old appeared to find some consistency prior to suffering the back strain with 5.1 scoreless innings over his last six outings.
