  • Despite finishing inside the top-three, Atletico Madrid saw 26-of-37 matches go under the 2.5-goal over/under mark (2.1 goals per match).

  • Eight clubs averaged more than 2.5 goals per match. Barcelona was the only team to score at least 3.0 goals per contest. Even with the terrific offensive output, they lost the league title to Real Madrid.

  • Villarreal has produced three goals or more in 25-of-37 matches.

  • Barca, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid are still the three most talented teams in the league.

Data Through 37 Match Days

There is only one match left in the 2019-2020 La Liga campaign. For the most part, everything has been settled already. Real Madrid has won the league title, FC Barcelona has completed a disappointing campaign, and there are four teams vying for two UEFA Europa League spots. Downstairs, things are far from settled -- Leganes and Celta Vigo will decide which team is relegated in the final weekend of the season.

One thing that has been interesting in La Liga is that, among the top leagues in Europe, Spain is the one that averages fewer total goals per fixture. The numbers don’t lie -- only six teams have witnessed more than half of their matches ending with at least three goals. Out of that group, only Barcelona finished in the top-three. For instance, Real Madrid has seen 19 of their games end with two goals or fewer.

Atletico Madrid’s situation is even more incredible. Despite finishing in the top-three, they ranked as the joint-worst team when it comes to the over/under statistic -- only 11 of their 37 matches have witnessed over 2.5 total goals. Valladolid and Athletic Bilbao tied them in that spot. Atletico Madrid also ranked as one of the worst teams in the league when it comes to the average of total goals per game, scoring 2.1 per fixture.

Wealth Of Scoring

Only eight clubs averaged over 2.5 total goals per match and Barcelona was the only side to top the three-goal-per-match plateau. That didn’t work for them, however, as they lost the league title to Real Madrid with one game left on the schedule following a disappointing 2-1 loss at home against Osasuna on Match Day 37.

Surprisingly, Villarreal led the league when it comes to scoring over 2.5 goals per game -- 25 of their 37 matches have witnessed at least three goals in total. No team can match that tally, although, Real Sociedad and FC Barcelona are right behind them with 23 fixtures resulting in more than 2.5 total goals.

Barca, Real Madrid, and Atletico Madrid will still get most of the praise on a weekly basis, and for good reason -- they still are the three most talented teams in the league by a wide margin. However, that star power doesn’t always translate to entertainment and the season figures certainly back that up.
