Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy Drawing Most Betting Action Ahead of U.S. Open

The U.S Open betting action on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy

U.S. Open golf betting is not easy.

For the players, it is one of the hardest tests in all of golf, with very thick rough and difficult hole locations that will challenge them this week at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Those few things, along with limited course history from which to pull data – the course hasn’t hosted the U.S. Open since 1988 – selecting golfers this week will be difficult for bettors.

So, what are bettors doing ahead of the tournament? They are going with the players entering the week in the best form.

With four wins this seaspm, including the Masters, Scottie Scheffler is the hottest player in the world this year. And fresh off his victory at the RBC Canadian Open, Rory McIlory is the hottest player right now.

These two golfers are the most bet at the BetMGM online sportsbook.

As of Monday night, Scheffler (+1400) has the most tickets (6.2%) and handle (8.7%). Meanwhile, McIlroy (+1100) is right behind, with 5.4% of the tickets, and is third in handle (7%). Justin Thomas (+1200) is barely ahead of McIlroy in handle percentage (7.1%).

Thomas also falls into the hot category following his win at the PGA Championship last month and a third-place finish at last week’s RBC Canadian Open.

McIlroy has by far the best history at the U.S. Open of the three. He has three straight top-10 finishes and six overall. Meanwhile, Scheffler finished seventh last year at Torrey Pines but has finishes of MC, T-27, MC. Thomas has just two top-10 finishes (2017, 2020).

Defending champion Jon Rahm (+1400) is drawing only 2.9% of the tickets and 4.3% of the handle.

  3. Will Zalatoris – 5.1%
  4. Justin Thomas – 4.8%
  5. Cameron Smith – 4.6%

It’s no surprise Zalatoris (+2500) is a target for bettors. The 25-year-old crushes majors; in eight career starts, he has five top-8 finishes. And one of those starts was a WD at the British Open due to a wrist injury.

Smith (+2200) won the Players Championship earlier this year and is seeking his first career major win. His best U.S. Open finish is a T-4, which came back in 2015.
