Bayern Munich Preview

Unfortunately for Bayern, they crashed out of the Champions League earlier this week despite a 1-0 win over PSG. On the bright side, they are still in the driver’s seat for another Bundesliga title. With six matches left, Hans-Dieter Flick’s side holds a five-point lead over second-place RB Leipzig, a team they beat a couple of weeks ago, giving Munich a comfortable cushion at the top.

But it may not be easy for Bayern, as the squad is missing several key players, most notably Robert Lewandowski. The German side has not looked the same without the best striking in the world leading the way. It also hasn’t helped to have Serge Gnabry, Corentin Tolisso, and others missing in action. The absence of those players showed against PSG and could be a factor moving forward.

Keep in mind that despite the win over Leipzig earlier this month, Munich also dropped points in a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin last weekend. While Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored twice over the two Champions League games with PSG, he has just one goal in the Bundesliga in 18 appearances. With both Lewandowski and Gnabry out, Thomas Muller is the only active player with more than five Bundesliga goals for Munich this season.

Defensively, center-back Niklas Sule is also among Munich’s injured players, forcing the club to reorganize the back four. Somehow, the Germans managed to keep a clean sheet against PSG on Tuesday, so all hope is not lost. But things are far from ideal with Sule unavailable.

Wolfsburg Preview

If Wolfsburg has any chance of competing for the Bundesliga title, this is a game they have to win. They currently sit third in the table, 11 points behind Munich. A win could leave the door slightly ajar for the Wolves to make a move. Three points against Bayern would also go a long way toward securing Champions League football for next season. Wolfsburg currently has a seven-point cushion over Borussia Dortmund for a top-4 place.

Of course, Oliver Glasner’s squad will have to bounce back quickly from a troubling 4-3 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt last weekend. Since the start of March, Wolfsburg has lost three of five games across all competitions, negating some of the club’s strong play during the second half of January and February.

On paper, Wolfsburg has conceded the second-fewest goals in the Bundesliga this season. But you wouldn’t know that after they gave up four goals against Frankfurt last week. Wolfsburg dominated the possession and the chances in that game, but they allowed Frankfurt to finish almost all of their scoring opportunities.

The silver lining is that the goals have kept coming for Wolfsburg in recent weeks, including three in the loss to Frankfurt. Wout Weghorst has been steady all season and is in great form, scoring four goals and chipping in four assists over his last five Bundesliga games. With Lewandowski missing, he might be the best striker on the field against Munich this weekend.

The Pick

Frankfurt has just one win this season against teams that are currently in the top-5 Bundesliga spots, so it’s difficult to envision the Wolves getting a win. At the same time, Munich is vulnerable with so many missing players and doesn’t have their usual depth to rotate players after a mid-week game without a drop-off in quality. That could equal a draw between Bayern Munich and Wolfburg, tightening up the Bundesliga race.
